In Hindu religion, Goddess Saraswati is considered to be an abode of knowledge, wisdom and learning and she is also the consort of Lord Brahma, the creator of universe. There are only few temples in India which are dedicated to goddess Saraswati, among them is Basara Gnana Saraswati temple, located on the banks of river Godavari in Nizamabad district which is around 205 KM’s from Hyderabad - capital city of Andhra Pradesh.

Sage Veda Vyasa – who is also known as the incarnation of Maha Vishnu and beyond that a great guru, a philosopher of Hindus has done severe penance on the banks of Godavari and as a instruction from Lord Brahma and as a request from all gods. In the process , Sage Veda Vyasa brought a fistful of sand every day to make the idol of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Maha Kali and installed the deity over at this place.

This place is considered to be very sacred by Hindus and every year lakhs of parents across the country visit this sacred temple along with their children to start their formal education also popularly known as “Akshara Abhyas”. Historically, this ancient temple stands to the period of Chalukyas who ruled in 11th and 12th centuries.

There is a sense of peace that takes over any one who walks into this serene and sacred environment. Along with the shrine of goddess Saraswati there are shrines that are dedicated to goddess Maha Lakshmi – The goddess of wealth and Goddess Kali – The goddess of death. The temple visit is not complete without visiting the banks of Godavari where thousands of devotees take a holy dip before entering the temple. There is also a shiva temple dedicated along the banks of the river. Also there are many boats at the banks which offer a boat ride.

Any visitor visiting this place will be awestruck by the beautiful surroundings. The view of the bridge from the river banks is magnificent. A great display of the modern days architectural excellence merging in the picturesque natural surroundings.


The temple opens at 04:00 AM in the morning followed by issuance of pooja tickets and the archana/ offerings to the goddess.

Maha shivaratri, Devi Navrathrulu are celebrated in great pomp at this place.
