Medak Church, Medak District
Medak Church – The biggest church in the Asia situated in Medak District of Andhra Pradesh, Built in a span of 10 years (1914 – 1924) under the today’s concept of “Food for work program”. This church was the brain child of Charles Walker Posnett, a missionary from the “English Wesleyan Methodist Mission”. The church is built near to a hillock that has been fortified in the times of Kakatiya, one can see its remains from the main road.
Most of them were farmers around the village who participated in the making of this great church which even stands today as a testimony to the famine and “the concept of food for work” then. The great granite structure dedicated to the Christ can accommodate up to 5000 people at one time.
There are six different colors of mosaic tiles that were imported from England and used in the church’s flooring. This magnificent white granite structure not only stands for peace but a great example of Gothic architecture in India and South-east Asia.
The interesting part of the church among all the architecture excellence is the stained glass windows that tell the story of Jesus in vibrant colorful pictures. On the left it tells about the Crucifixion (constructed in 1958) and on the right it talks about the Nativity (constructed in 1947) and in the centre lays the Altar and Ascension window (constructed in 1927), surprisingly, all of them were constructed at different times. Any one visiting the church should be all praises of the bell tower at the church front; another attraction that stands is the church tower reaching the skies, giving an impression as if sending a message to the heavens.
Its definitely breath taking for any one to stand in front of the nearing 100 year old giant that stands 173 feet tall for unity and peace.
Medak church is 100 Km from Hyderabad. This place is accessible by plenty of buses from Secunderabad and Hyderabad Bus Stations. One can also drive to this place to get a feel of the village environment.
